A Word of Welcome

From Prof Johann Strauss

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture, Landbouweekblad (South Africa’s biggest agricultural media brand), Conservation Agriculture Western Cape, the conservation-farming body African Conservation Tillage Network, and the FAO are proud to invite famers, researchers and everyone that works within the field of conservation agriculture to attend the 9th World Congress on Conservation Agriculture in South Africa from 22-25 July 2024.

The hosting partners are intimately involved in the promotion of conservation agriculture, not only in South Africa, but across the whole subcontinent. We have big plans to ensure that 9WCCA will be a spectacular event.

With Cape Town as the host city, the congress will take place not only in one of the most picturesque cities in the world, but also the heartland of South African conservation agriculture, with the Western Cape province sporting the highest adoption rate of conservation agriculture in the country.

Delegates will not only be exposed to international best practices in conservation farming but will also be exposed to the unique South African conservation farming experience. Apart from lecture days, there will also be a practical day at Langgewens Research Farm in the Swartland.

Please add your e-mail address to the mailing list below to receive updates and information about the congress.

We hope to see all of you in South Africa!

CONCEPT

Although conservation agriculture is a proven strategy for mitigating the impacts of climate change and enhancing carbon sequestration, adoption figures still need to be higher, especially in Africa.

The 9th World Congress on Conservation Agriculture will present practical farming solutions stemming from global research, international farming best practices, and the broader agricultural industry.

The congress will enhance the adoption of conservation agriculture by addressing aspects such as quantifying soil health, including livestock integration into cropping systems, nutrient stratification, soil acidification and how to scale out/up progressively.

AIMS

  • Practical solutions to enhance CA adoption and scaling out/up even further and faster with special reference to Africa.

  • Practical methods and examples by way of case studies, of dealing with real or perceived challenges in the CA system. This include nutrient stratification, integrated soil fertility and acidity management, weeding, livestock integration and integrated pest management.

  • Monitoring, quantifying and measuring soil health.

The winning bid will be announced at the closing ceremony of the 9WCCA on 24 July 2024 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Bids to host the 10WCCA should be submitted to the 9WCCA Secretariat by 20 May 2024.
